Rules of Training

So, I felt like my training was being cut short over the past couple of weeks because of other commitments and I decided to put down some training rules because I need to make sure my workouts are of high quality. I plan every workout so carefully to get the most out of my training as well as get to at least some of the commitments that we have scheduled. Basketball season is over this week, so that means that after this week I don't have night time duties at school - I am so happy about this. My life is extrememly planned - all of my workouts and where I am going are planned for the next 2 weeks already. Here are my new training rules:
1. All workouts will be completed - no excuses. I make sure that I get to the gym with plenty of time to complete the workout before planned commitments
2. The phone (both home and cell) will go unanswered when I am on my bike - If I was at the gym, I wouldn't have a phone on me so what is the difference when I am at home on the bike
3. Grocery shopping will be done on Saturday afternoons since I have it scheduled that way and it works.
4. All things need to be planned ahead of time in order to accomodate my training schedule - Sorry to all I will disappoint as I know there will be some of you!
5. Weeknights are out for social activities - my long bikes are on Friday nights, I double up on workouts on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Yoga is a priority on Wednesdays, and Mondays are my long swim days

I love my training right now and just want to give myself the best shot at doing well at Ironman!!! I feel like me again finally training at a very high time commitment which I haven't felt like me since before Tinman in June. I am very excited about feeling like I have everything going in the right direction.

A review of January

6 months to Ironman...

I am trying. I have spent a lot of time on my bike. Because of the marathon, I had lost a lot of bike strength and endurance since I was running so much. It is so funny to me that you can get a lot out of bike training that helps you with running but running doesn't help you with biking. The bike portion of the day is also my biggest fear since I am not the strongest biker. I really need a lot of bike work so that is what I am doing. My running is going ok but due to a lot of ice and snow this winter, I have been attached to the treadmill. I hate the treadmill but I hate ice even more. I get very disappointed by my distances on the treadmill. I feel like I am working really hard on the treadmill but I don't go as far as I would if I were outside. I don't know if I am just bored or if the treadmill is wrong (I doubt it). Because of where I work and when the sun goes down, I don't run after work outside much because the sides of the road (a very busy road) are all iced over and if I go home or anywhere else, I generally get there too late to run in the light which I want to do in order to avoid the ice. UGH!!! I am very happy that I am getting in the running time but not necessarily happy with the distances covered but I guess you could say that I am doing race pace training since I am going so slow, and who am I kidding, this slow pace will be my Ironman race pace. I am also tired of being in our spare bedroom on the trainer. I get so bored - sometimes there isn't anything good enough on tv to entertain you enough during a bike workout. Again, I am getting in the bike time but not hitting the distances that I would cover if I was outside. I am really loving my new swim workouts though. Instead of just swimming lap after lap like I did last year, I am doing sets which are harder than just swimming but so much more enjoyable. I feel faster already and I am already way further ahead of my distances than I thought I would be capable at this point in time.

I am getting my hours working out a week up there and I am getting in distances. I am happy with my progress right now but would like to do a couple more things to make the most of my training: 1.Sleep 8 hours a night (it just isn't happening right now) and 2. Drink more water. 3. Figure out my diet so as to allow for the most energy at the correct times during the day and my workout.

In February, I will be cranking it up a little more (I guess that can be said for every month from here until July). I am eating, sleeping, and training Ironman right now. I am ready for warm weather but preparing for another 2 months on the trainer but maybe only 3 weeks until I can get outside again permanently. I am not ready for the next 6 months to go by quickly though as I have a lot of training to do during that time and am in no rush to get to Ironman yet. I am heading to Phoenix in 2 weeks so I can go outside to run or maybe rent a bike while I am down there. That will be nice. Maybe I will also get my daily supply of vitamin D as well since there will be sun down there too and I will get my 15 minutes of sunshine a day.

If anyone wants to see me over the next 6 months, buy a Y membership, start running, or biking!!! Or maybe go back to high school and take biology - they see me everyday.

Winterfest 2008

Joe and I never run together. It is usually not a very good experience for both of us. This year Joe is still battling a sinus problem and on a high dose of antibiotics and prednisone so he decided to run the Albany Winter Festival 5K with me. I was not planning on running very fast - I love to enjoy the lights in the park, forget about running fast through them, enjoy them. So we started in my normal starting position, which Joe has never started in before, in the back of the pack where I belong. As soon as the air horn sounded, the crowd lurched forward and then stopped. This is fairly consistent with a race of this size. Joe didn't know what happened. Then we were moving up the hill and into the park. Joe had never had this experience before. The lack of race etiquette that happens back here is sometimes funny, sometimes annoying, and sometimes dangerous. The kids that weave between people and get under your feet is not a good thing. Just because I am slow doesn't mean I am unexperienced and I welcome new people to enjoy the sport but they need to learn race etique before they race or else it is not fun for the rest of us. Joe was taking it all in though and running with me! We actually watched all of the animals that were portrayed in the lights and enjoyed the tour around the world with Australia, France, Piza, and Japan represented. Joe even let me beat him. I told him it didn't matter if he beat me or not but he let me win. Of course, he got to deal with the chaos at the finish line with people not stopping in the shoot and running into others or not understanding that there was order in the line, not just people hanging out. Overall, a fun day with my husband. We deserve a relaxing race every once in a while since the rest of the year won't be so relaxing!!

New Year, New Age! Goals for 2009

Since 2008 is coming to an end, I figured I would put up my goals for 2009. These are not resolutions but goals for my life for the year. This is a big year for me; I turn 30 on Jan 2 and I am doing an Ironman. How exciting!!! So here are my goals for the next year:

To stay healthy

To have a successful 1/2 IM (PR and feel mentally prepared) in preparation for IM LP

To finish IM LP (my first IM) upright and with a smile within the 17 hour time limit (who am I kidding, I will be smiling and crying all at the same time)

To PR in a fall marathon since I didn't do it this year

To save money so that Joe and I can go to Hawaii next year or go back to a Sandles resort in the Carribean or to take a cruise to somewhere tropical - we just want to take a big trip in the year 2010 after our second Ironman.

To live a happy, exciting, athletic life with my loving husband, family, and friends.

I hope everyone will have a fantastic 2009 with health and happiness! Enjoy the new year! But lets not rush into the summer months. I have a lot of training to do and am not ready for July to come yet!
